Self managed team in large organizations

So as usual I like to ask questions as part of my posts.  How do we stay a self managed team in a large organiation.  When you have so many teams you end up with large dependencies and when you have large dependencies the concept of true self management does become muddled.   So I am curious how other companies have been dealing with this?
